My first contact with Maximum The Hormone was 10 years ago, give or take, with this song, which seems like a happy-fun thing until it changes. That kind of style change midsong — even if a bit truncated, as in this case — was new to me, and it was pretty cool.
After that, I didn’t give it much thought, only checking occasionally what they were up to. I didn’t enjoy their songs enough to put into any typical playlist rotation that I have, but I did enjoy it enough to come back from time to time.
Well, last week I saw a music video “feat. Atarashii Gakko” (I’m a few months behind, I know) and saw people losing their minds in the comments, so I watched it. And, oh man, didn’t I lose my mind too? And I didn’t even know who Atarashii Gakko was. But the music is so good, and the choreography is awesome.
So I was intrigued and went looking for more music videos from Atarashii Gakko and found this.
And this.
And this.
I know nothing about J-pop and don’t really enjoy it, and the overlap with other genres in these songs doesn’t make it any better to me but, goddamn, ain’t those videos and choreography cool? Not only do they match very well their respective songs, but everything seems to be inspired so much by… anime and tokusatsu? This is all new for me, so forgive me if things like this are going on for a while, but it blew my mind.
Still, I’m in awe. I wouldn’t buy their album (not that it’s bad, I just do not enjoy these genres) but, if someone invited me to their concert, I would definitely go.
Anyway, because of all this, I keep rewatching their collaboration on Shimi at least once a day. It’s my new obsession. I can’t escape it.
It’s so good.
