Shiny Happy People

As some people say, this is such a weird song from R.E.M. I’m not their biggest fan, but I’ve been known to enjoy their music from time to time. This one, though, really is catchy and unlike the rest because it really is so happy, and every time it plays (it’s always on the playlist with my favorite songs) I can’t help but think “this is a damn good song”, even though I’m not known for my joie de vivre or enjoying happy things. Also, love Kate Pierson (from the B-52s) doing back vocals and harmonies there, such a good voice. Too bad the music video is kinda, I don’t know, extremely goofy and silly.

I really like the “uneven” playing of the guitar chords and the claps, which both seem to do something on the upbeat of the song.

Now compare this song with the other big hit from the same album, Losing My Religion.

That’s a big contrast, I would say. Both are really, really good.

My first contact with R.E.M., though, was with Imitation of Life actually, which has, like, one of the most amazing music videos I’ve ever seen.

The whole 3 minutes and 57 seconds of that video? That’s just a 20-second clip being played back and forth throughout the song. I still find it mind-blowing.
